This may be one of those situations where the data can be misleading if not flat out wrong. My daughter-in-law has noth a BA & MA in theatre and acting. First couple of years out of school she concentrated on breaking into the profession. Her income was derived from retail work and waitressing. She was getting by on less than $20,000 a year. It is now 7 years after she finished me MA and she made $75,000 last year in marketing and PR. Many of those "soft" skills referred to in the article plus her ability to talk in front of a group of people got her where she is.

Her husband, my son, an engineer got his first job because his Big 10 school had a marvelous mentoring program which connected interested engineering students with that university's engineering grads who lived in the metro area. When he graduated, engineering firms were offering signing bonuses and relocation costs to new hires. The next year almost no one was getting job offers.

University doesn't care? Sounds familiar! I asked my engineering graduate school advisor if all the students in B.S. in bioengineering programs at this university would be able to get jobs when there really weren't that many? His answer was, "I don't care, it's not my problem."
