What I do: I assign and edit stories about why and how higher education and workforce training programs are changing; who they’re serving and who they’re leaving behind; whether they’re effective and how we know; the ways private interests try to benefit from them; and how they shape our lives and our democracy.

My background: As an editor or reporter, I’ve produced journalism about education, college and job training published by The Associated Press, WIRED, Mother Jones, The Guardian, Slate, The 19th News, Fast Company, USA Today and Open Campus. I’ve also edited arts and culture stories for Smithsonian Magazine and Town & Style St. Louis Magazine.

After growing up in Virginia, my first journalism job was as a magazine editor in St. Louis. I returned to the D.C. area and worked for The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, reporting news, feature and data stories and investigating allegations of fraud at the American Red Cross and claims of sexual assault at the University of Virginia. As a reporter and editor for U.S. News & World Report, I led coverage of the annual Best Jobs rankings, analyzing employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. I reported from campuses, classrooms and the D.C. jail for EdSurge, where I also led a team of staff and freelance journalists who published award-winning stories, newsletters and podcast episodes about the future of learning. I joined The Hechinger Report in 2026 as a senior editor for higher education.

Journalistic ethics: I aim to serve the public by publishing journalism that is accurate, fair and free from influence; treats people with dignity and shares their voices; holds power to account and interrogates who’s profiting and who’s losing out; draws on evidence to answer important questions, and to raise new ones; and communicates facts and ideas clearly so that readers understand what’s at stake for them and for society. I believe a well-told story can make a difference.
