As the 2012 election season intensifies, the country’s two national teachers’ unions are entering the fray once again with millions of dollars in donations to candidates and other groups. The National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers made a combined 348 contributions between Jan. 1 and May 31 of this year, totaling more than $2.6 million, according to Federal Election Commission filings. The AFT alone spent more than $1 million in Wisconsin in the month leading up to Governor Scott Walker’s recall election, according to the filings. Walker, who had stripped most public workers of collective bargaining rights, was not defeated. The unions have also doled out nearly $1 million to Congressional candidates.
