The Hechinger Report is a national nonprofit newsroom that reports on one topic: education. Sign up for our weekly newsletters to get stories like this delivered directly to your inbox.

For the last five years, The Hechinger Report has been covering the most important topics in education, from Common Core to teacher prep to high school reform.

Now we’re adding the immigrant experience to the list and we need your help.

We are aiming to raise $35,000 before Thanksgiving to fund our coverage of this new topic. If you are reading this, we know you care about education. Every dollar you pledge will be matched by our crowd-funding partner, Beacon.

The Hechinger Report raised nearly a third of its total fundraising goal on Day One of our campaign Thursday. We are off to the races and it’s not too late to join in!

The Hechinger Report produces hundreds of stories (over 500 already this year) from classrooms and campuses across the country on the most important education issues of our time — including Common Core, school discipline, early education, teacher preparation, higher education, and classroom technology.

Our small, but dedicated staff of expert reporters and editors knock it out of the park weekly on a frugal nonprofit budget. We know from your feedback that you appreciate the work we do and our dual focus on inequality and innovation. But producing award-winning journalism is not free. For example, sending a reporter on a three-day trip to visit schools costs about $1,200.

We rely on a growing network of foundations for most of our funding, but we know we have thousands of dedicated readers like you who value our work and are eager to see it continue. Be part of the important work we’re doing, producing some of the best national education coverage in the country.

Any amount makes a difference. A large base of small donors shows our larger backers how important our work is to people like teachers and students who don’t always have a lot to give. If you can afford it though, gifts of $120 or more will be especially helpful in getting us across that $35,000 finish line.

The Hechinger Report provides in-depth, fact-based, unbiased reporting on education that is free to all readers. But that doesn't mean it's free to produce. Our work keeps educators and the public informed about pressing issues at schools and on campuses throughout the country. We tell the whole story, even when the details are inconvenient. Help us keep doing that.
