The second-round application deadline for the Race to the Top competition has now passed. Thirty-five states and Washington, D.C. applied.
They are all vying for the $3.4 billion left to be doled out by the Obama administration.
The first round was won by just two states, Delaware and Tennessee. Together they received $600 million for their winning applications.
This time nine states dropped out of the running. Six states that skipped the first round are now in the hunt.
